The science of geomatics is the technology of gathering, analysing, interpreting and using geographic information from a multitude of sources: Land surveying, High Definition Laser scanning, Aerial photography, Satellite imagery and many more.
The use of 3-dimensional spatial information to produce intelligent maps and plans has become commonplace right across industry from the use of digital maps combined with GPS positioning for in-car navigation to the management of office environments via a touch sensitive computer screen. More traditional uses of map data include digital topographical mapping and building plans for Architects and Civil Engineers.
